Carpe Librum

Interactive Library Kiosk

Created by Erin Gallagher, Fatima Knight, Erin Hart, Etiyene Eshett, Mia Raleigh, and Alex Faiello

The Carpe Librum Library Kiosk was created in the hopes to increase the use and understanding of local libraries. When you walk into a library, you might have the hopes of finding a specific book and not know where to start. Or you might be itching to start reading something, but not know what you want. The Carpe Librum Library Kiosk solves those problems for you. This kiosk is available at the front of the library and can help you in more ways than one. It is a modern, accessible and disability friendly kiosk that is easy to interact with.

Part of our focus was to make sure this kiosk was user friendly, specifically to those with disabilities. We kept in mind the challenges people have with accessibility in design. This is a 3D mockup of the physical kiosk. It would have a screen and a separate control panel. On the control panel, you could adjust the height of the screen according to your needs so you can interact with the touch screen feature. On the home screen are the language settings, a speak-aloud feature, font size adjustments, and a help button that brings a librarian to help you use the kiosk. You can also scan your books, receive receipts, and pay with cash for overdue fines all within the kiosk.
